How to pack for your China Trip?
Ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Traveling to China is an incredible experience filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and delicious food. To make sure your trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, a little preparation goes a long way.
Last week, I shared some packing tips for Chongqing and received many questions about packing for other parts of China. Since China is so vast, with different climates in different areas, it's hard to cover everything in a single post. However, I realized that some packing topics are universal, regardless of where you go. Things like a med kit (because Chinese food is delicious but can sometimes be a surprise to your system), a laundry kit (essential for a long trip—no one wants stinky travel partners!), and mosquito repellent (because who wants itchy bites?) are useful everywhere.
With that in mind, here is a friendly packing guide to help you get ready for your journey through China!
The Ultimate Health & Wellness Kit
Think of your med kit as your personal first-aid station. While you can definitely find pharmacies in China, having a few essentials on hand means you can handle minor issues without the stress of navigating a new language and unfamiliar products, especially when you're not feeling well.
Tummy Troubles: Don't let an upset stomach slow you down. Bring some loperamide (an antidiarrheal), pink bismuth chewables for a soothing tummy, and some antacid tablets. They're lifesavers for minor dietary adjustments.
Aches and Pains: Pack a fever reducer like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. It's great for headaches, minor fevers, or those days when you've done a little too much walking.
Minor Cuts and Scrapes: A few adhesive bandages and some single-use wound prep towelettes (alcohol or benzalkonium chloride) are perfect for cleaning up small nicks. A tube of topical antibiotic cream (like Neosporin or Polysporin if you have a neomycin sulfate allergy) is also a good idea. For skin irritations, a single-use packet of hydrocortisone cream can provide quick relief.
Blister Busters: Your feet will thank you for packing some moleskin! This magical stuff prevents blisters from forming. If you feel a "hotspot" on your foot, just cut a piece and apply it before a blister even starts.
Handy Tools: A small pair of scissors (blunt-tipped medical bandage scissors are a great choice for smooth security checks at train stations), tweezers, and nail clippers are incredibly useful for everything from first aid to fixing a loose thread.
The Super-Efficient Laundry Kit
Packing light is a superpower, especially when you're on the move. A simple laundry kit allows you to refresh your clothes on the go, saving space in your luggage and keeping you feeling fresh.
Hotel Room Washing: Sink-washing in your hotel room is a fantastic way to keep your clothes clean and your packing minimal. I highly recommend bringing along some single-use, sink-sized detergent packets. They're compact and mess-free. If you want to do a bigger load of laundry during your trip, ask about laundry room when you check-in the hotel (some of them will have a self-service laundry room), where you will stay for few nights.
Drying Your Clothes: A lightweight, 3-meter clothesline and a few clothespins are all you need to create a personal drying rack. Some hotels provides clothes hanger, you can also use them to dry your cleaned laundry.
Quick-Drying Fabrics: When choosing what to pack, opt for fabrics that dry quickly. Synthetic underwear and quick-drying shirts are perfect. A good tip is to try out different fabrics before you travel to find what's most comfortable for you. Socks can take a bit longer to dry, so a good habit is to wash them as soon as you arrive at a new place where you'll be staying for a couple of nights.
Brave the Bugs: Your Mosquito Defense
Depending on the season and location, you might encounter some mosquitoes. Being prepared means you can enjoy the beautiful evenings without any pesky interruptions.
Long-Sleeved Protection: For warmer weather, pack a couple of long-sleeved shirts made from a tight-knit fabric that mosquitoes can't bite through. Fishing shirts (like the Columbia PFG brand) are excellent for this, and many come with great ventilation to keep you cool.
Effective Repellent: If you're comfortable with it, DEET is a very effective repellent. Just a few drops on your collar and cuffs can work wonders, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Natural Alternatives: If you prefer a more natural option, creams formulated with citronella, eucalyptus, or other mosquito-repelling oils can be applied directly to exposed skin.
With these tips, you'll be well-prepared for any situation and can focus on what really matters: enjoying every single moment of your incredible journey through China! Happy travels!
